A mother’s letter to her son

    Dear Editor:

After a call from my son seeking advice about social media hate talk on using guns to solve U.S. problems, I wrote: Life is never perfect, but people do good things and in the end it is what we are remembered for that matters. In all the pain generated in South Carolina some good things have emerged. I am called to face facts even when I don't like them. I am called to respond with kindness and love. It’s not always easy to do, but when done it has its rewards.

Do I worry about what is happening in the economy — yes. Do I face the perceived enemy and still work to provide facts that I know and facts that I learn — yes.

I do not seek anger, rather I seek growth in understanding and new and better solutions that help to turn the economy around. I have many avenues I can take because I am blessed with patience and a love of humankind. All of my answers leave everyone happy because no one died.

I once saved my life, your life and the life of your father because I did not use a gun to solve the problem. I could never resort to the use of a gun to solve man's problems because guns are built to kill, they are not built to solve human or economic problems.

Guns are for hunters. Guns are a last resort for police to protect others from harm. When they are abused and used to solve someone's perceived problem, they still leave the economy the same and do not solve the problem.

It took 75 plus years for the economy to be attacked and changed — all without a gun. If they can do that, so can we.

We are working to get our labor laws back. They were the economic backbone that grew the middle class and kept the majority of working people in livable wages. They put food on the table and sent our children to college. They solved economic problems and everyone benefited. If it worked once without a gun, it can work again.

    Love, Mom
