Morris Farm plant sale May 27

Tue, 05/23/2017 - 9:00am

The barn at Morris Farm is once again filling up with a huge selection of heirloom tomatoes, hardy Maine-grown perennials, vegetable and flower seedlings, and herbs for the farm’s annual plant sale this Saturday, May 27 from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

The sale features a wide variety of locally grown perennials, hardened off and ready for planting: black-eyed Susan, phlox, bee balm, Columbine, lupine, ladies mantle, Iris, poppies, hosta, geraniums, Day lilies, and Rhubarb, to name just a few.  A selection of heirloom Dahlias will be on sale, along with some gorgeous red Dahlias grown year after year in a local garden.  Finally, the sale will offer white cedar tree seedlings, along with vegetable seedlings and some annual flower seedlings.

There will be 16 varieties of heirloom tomato seedlings available this year, most of which are not available unless you grow them yourself. Slicing tomatoes can be found in all colors: Aunt Ruby’s green, black prince, Cherokee purple, cosmonaut Volkov, garden peach, Mark Twain, pineapple, Pruden’s purple, Paul Robeson and Rose De Berne. The cherry tomato varieties include black cherry, Fargo yellow pear, and Peacevine cherry. And the paste tomatoes include Grandma Mary’s Paste, Orange Banana Paste and Speckled Roman. Sometimes a salad needs nothing but tomatoes!

Descriptions of all the tomatoes will be available to help home gardeners choose the perfect combinations for salads, slicing and snacking. Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions about the plants and their care. All proceeds from the sale benefit the Morris Farm’s education programs.

Coffee and baked goods will be sold in the Morris Farm Store, where you will find a selection of locally produced vegetables, meat, dairy products and canned goods. Freshly picked fiddleheads will be available.

The Morris Farm Trust is a member-supported nonprofit educational farm located at 156 Gardiner Road (Rt 27 North) in Wiscasset. For more information about Morris Farm or the plant sale, please visit www.morrisfarm.org, email info@morrisfarm.org, or call 882-4080.
