Mid-March classes at adult ed

Tue, 03/03/2015 - 1:15pm

We had a very snowy, cold February, and now it's March with the promise of warmer weather. It's a great time to get out of the house and learn something new. During March Boothbay Region Adult Ed is offering a variety of classes. You can learn about editing digital photos on your computer, the importance of real estate planning, and about backyard beekeeping. Just a reminder that classes with insufficient enrollment are usually canceled a day or two before they are scheduled to begin, so register early.

One of the most important assets we will ever possess is our home. In today’s current economic environment it is important to understand various issues that may come into play in your lifetime. In How Real Estate Planning Benefits You, Chip Griffin will discuss zoning opportunities, the value of title insurance, succession strategies, and MaineCare exemptions. Chip will also provide an overview of advanced real estate planning such as LLCs and trusts to pass family property, subdivision ordinances, and the importance of surveys and title searches. The class is on Tuesday, March 17, 6 to 8 p.m., and the fee is $10.

Are you curious about backyard beekeeping? Or just want to learn more about bees? Come to Backyard Beekeeping, an interesting and informative basic class to learn about honey bees, their importance, biology, equipment, hive products and more! Kim will talk about diseases, pests and other common problems, as well caring for and enjoying your own honey bees. There will be time for questions. Kim Scheimreif raises bees, gardens and homesteads with her family on their farm “Shepherds and Such” in Waldoboro. This workshop is on Wednesday, March 18 from 6 to 8 p.m., and the cost is $12.

Do you have a daughter or son who will be babysitting this summer? Red Cross Babysitting is a six-hour course for 11 to 15-year-olds who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants. It also offers hands-on skills practice and additional training in first aid. In class, you'll learn how to respond to emergencies with first aid, rescue breathing and make good decisions under pressure as well as how to recognize safety issues. This class meets on two Wednesdays from 2 to 5 p.m. at Boothbay Region Elementary School. The dates are March 18, and April 1. Please note the second session has been changed from March 25 to April 1. The fee is $60 and includes the Red Cross babysitter handbook.

Upcoming classes later in March include: Using Your iPad or iPhone, Advanced Excel, and a local history talk by Chip Griffin.
