Boothbay Region High School may be a small school based on enrollment, but its wrestling team made a big impact this weekend.

Seahawk wrestler Antonio Maulolo won the 220-pound weight class and Howie Carter placed third in the 160-pound class at the prestigious McDonald’s Tournament held in Rumford. This is 30th year the tournament has drawn wrestlers from all three Classes statewide.

The tournament field had mostly Class A and B schools. Boothbay Region finished 10th out of 22 schools. Class A Noble, of North Berwick, finished first with 168.5 points, followed by Class B Ellsworth with 128.5, and in third, host Class B Mountain Valley with 109.

Boothbay Region was the second-highest placing Class C school. Dirigo was the top performing school at the meet.

Boothbay Region wrestling coach Allan Crocker was pleased with his team’s early season performance against top-notch state competition.

“Our team made a major statement this weekend,” Crocker said. “In a tournament made up of mostly Class A and B schools, we placed two wrestlers on the podium. For a program in (its) second year back as a varsity sport that was a terrific result.”

Maulolo is a two-time defending Class C wrestling champion. His performance was the best any Boothbay Region wrestler ever posted at the tournament, defeating opponents from Oxford Hills, Fryeburg Academy and Foxcroft Academy.

Carter defeated wrestlers from Hampden Academy, Noble and Fryeburg Academy en route to his third place finish.

Boothbay Region wrestlers Brandon Andrews and Nick Labonte scored victories in the “pigtail” round, which qualified them to compete in the championship bracket.
