Martha S. Dalton, 86, of Jones Road, Wiscasset died with family by her side on April 20, 2017 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

She was born in Damariscotta on July 27, 1930, the daughter of Willard P. and Catherine (Reay) Stevens. She attended Damariscotta schools and graduated from Lincoln Academy in Damariscotta. Martha went to work for Western Union as a telephone operator. In October 1955 she married Raymond A. Dalton Jr. and went on to hold local jobs at the Ledges Inn and Pendleton's Market. She then found her passion working 37 years within the Wiscasset School system as a teacher's aide.

Martha, as a young woman, loved participating in dressage horse shows achieving many top place ribbons. She often told stories of her love of dancing back in the day at places like Lakehurst and other local spots. She enjoyed gardening, community gatherings, and couldn't resist a parade. "Ma Dalton" loved all of "her kids" that she met and knew through the school system. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond A. Dalton Jr. on October 19, 2011 and by one brother, Robert Stevens in 1994.

She is survived by two daughters, Theresa J. Archer and her husband Bernard of Burke, Virginia, Paula R. Dalton-Gove and her husband John of East Boothbay; one son, Raymond A. Dalton III and his wife Karen of Wiscasset; as well as six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend gratitude to the Mid Coast Hospital staff. Also, a very special thank you to Kelli Lewis and Pam Young for the loving care they provided that enabled Martha to live at home up until the last month and half of her life.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset with Rev. Josh Fitterling officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the church fellowship hall. Burial will be at Sheepscot Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Martha S. Dalton Scholarship Fund to be awarded to a June 2017 WHS graduating senior. Donations can be made at The First Bank in Wiscasset or at any branch.
