Market study for gambling?

Mon, 04/14/2014 - 4:30pm

    Dear Editor:

I wish government will get out of the business of subsidizing business. The latest bill (LD 1853) from Rep. Louis J. Luchini of Ellsworth would have us pay $150,000 to perform a market study for feasibility the expanding gambling in Maine.

Gambling is something many enjoy, and I personally believe this is an area of law we could relax a bit, especially since the state lottery is such a bad deal for gamblers and the monopoly type of casinos such as “Hollywood Slots Casino” and the “Oxford Casino” actually draws business away from other hotels restaurants, and entertainment venues.

But this corporate giveaway of our tax money is a bad example of wasteful corporate welfare. Market studies are fine for business, and they benefit business. If a gambling outfit wants a market study, let them pay for it; not us!
