Major storm this weekend predicted to miss most of Maine

Tue, 01/20/2015 - 3:15pm

A winter storm watch has been issued by the National Weather Service, beginning on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 8 a.m. and extending through midnight on Sunday. The watch covers all of Kennecbec, Sagadahoc, Lincoln and Knox counties along with coastal regions of York, Waldo and Cumberland.

Currently, predictions for local areas do not show significant accumulation. Forecasters at the National Weather Service are predicting areas far south of our region, such as Boston and New York, will take the brunt of the storm, which will then move out to sea.

Snow is expected to start on Saturday, mostly after 11 a.m., and continue through the night until around 2 a.m. In Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor snow is predicted to be 1-2 inches. In Edgecomb, Damariscotta, Wiscasset and Waldoboro, snow accumulation will be between 1 and 3 inches. In Nobleboro, 2-4 inches.

For those planning to head out on Saturday, Augusta and Portland are predicted to get between 2-4 inches of snow, while Brunswick will be harder hit with snow between 3 and 7 inches.

Highs on Saturday will be around 35 with light to moderate winds. Saturday night will have winds increasing with gusts reaching up to 30 mph, which will continue into Sunday.

Monday will have a chance of snow showers and highs near 20.
