Maine’s new abolitionists featured in film

Tue, 02/10/2015 - 3:30pm

Maine institutions and individuals are getting on the bandwagon to divest their portfolios from fossil fuels. To join with others around the world and celebrate Global Divestment Day “Vittles and Videos,” a local film and speaker series, will premiere a short film developed by Edgecomb activist Andy Burt in collaboration with videographer Martha Spiess on Friday, Feb. 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The film, “Meet Maine’s New Abolitionists: Seeding a Local Climate Justice Movement,” features the stories of three Mainers of diverse ages and backgrounds, who have become active in their church and communities on fossil fuel divestment and related climate justice issues.

Bill Rixon, a newly elected Freeport town councilor and an activist on divestment and climate change in his community and statewide, was interviewed for the film. He will join the group for discussion and storytelling over a hearty vegetarian soup and homemade bread, all created from Maine farm ingredients.

The event will take place at the Friends (Quaker) Meetinghouse, 77 Belvedere Road, Damariscotta. It is free and open to the public. The Midcoast Outreach and Peace Center is hosting the program.

The Vittles and Videos presentation showcases the first chapter of a planned series of films and discussion guides on intergenerational climate justice activism in Maine that Burt is creating. For the past 15 years, she has developed education and outreach programs on climate change, ocean acidification, energy solutions, and local farm and fisheries projects as an independent activist and as staff and consultant to the Maine Council of Churches and other Maine organizations.
