Maine pumpkin record squashed

Tue, 10/06/2015 - 5:45pm

    Another year, another record squashed.

    Literally.

During the professional growers' weigh-in Sunday at Pinkham's Plantation in Damariscotta, a new Maine State pumpkin record was established when Jefferson's Edwin Pierpont's pumpkin tipped the scales at 1,727.5 pounds, which obliterated last year's record, which was also set during the Pumpkinfest weigh-in.

Pierpont, who set the record in 2010 with a 1,471-pound pumpkin, saw his record smashed last year when Readfield's Joe Gaboury's 1,625-pound pumpkin topped the event.

This year, the title for heaviest pumpkin grown in Maine returns to Pierpont.

Behind Pierpont in the standings was Richard and Sue Powell, whose pumpkin weighed 1,548 pounds, then Elroy Morgan (1,446.5 pounds). Gaboury's pumpkin was seventh this year at 1,187 pounds.

In the squash division Joe Jutras was the top grower, as his squash squished the competition by weighing in at 1,262 pounds. Second place went to Justice Pierpont's 927-pound squash and third place was occupied by the Powell's 925.5 pounder.

In the volunteer division Jennifer Libby won the adult division with a 790.5 pound pumpkin. Robert Tibbetts took second with a 724.5 pound pumpkin and Buzzkins Number Five grown by New Hope for Women took third place with a 644-pound pumpkin.

In the volunteer youth division Crystal Miller was the top grower with a 491.5 pound pumpkin, followed by Helen Rice (468.5 pounds) and Kristal Curry (453.5 pounds).

From the weigh-in, the award-winning pumpkins will be put out to seed, while the runners-up will be used for decorations, boats, and ammo for the pumpkin drop.
