Lyman W. Smith

Lyman Whitman “Whit” Smith, 91, of Southport Island and Sanibel Island, Florida, died peacefully on Feb. 2, 2016, leaving his wife, Deborah, after 60 years of marriage.

Whit graduated from Milton Academy, Harvard College and Harvard Business School.

He served in the Army for three years during World War II and two years during the Korean War. Following that, he worked as a contract manager in for several electronic firms in the greater Boston area. He later attended Bentley College where he received his CPA and then formed his own public accounting firm. He lived in Weston, Massachusetts where he served on the planning board, six years as a selectman, and many years on the zoning board of appeals.

In retirement, Whit served in the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Boothbay Harbor for 15 years in the summers, and as a volunteer in the maintenance department at the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island during the winter. He accrued over 2,000 hours of volunteer time in the refuge.

Besides his wife, Deborah, Whit leaves a son, Lyman Knights Smith and his wife Lela, and their two sons, Adam and Jonathan, of North Billerica, Massachusetts; and a daughter, Liana Smith Kingsbury and her husband Don, and their four dogs, Max, Auggie, Coal and Buddy.

Whit requested there be no service and his ashes spread upon the ocean in front of his house in Maine.
