Loretta (DesJardins) “Lu” McCaffery of Stonington, Connecticut, formerly of Boothbay Harbor, died April 20, 2015.

Lu was born in Norwich, Connecticut, and married James McCaffery, also of Norwich, in 1947.

Lu was a registered nurse, graduating from the Lawrence and Memorial School of Nursing in 1947. She was trained to be a Navy nurse during World War II until the war ended. While she was a student nurse, she met Jim, a Marine returning home after serving in the South Pacific.

Lu and Jim resided in Norwich until retiring and moving to Boothbay Harbor in 1985.

Lu loved her family, friends, animals, the state of Maine, Moody’s Diner, and welcomed all to a glass of iced tea to their side porch at their home on Oak Street. She volunteered at the St. Andrews Thrift Shop, for Meals on Wheels, at St. Andrews blood pressure clinics, and the English literacy program. She and Jim were active at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor where they were daily communicants, welcomed new families at Mass, and Jim became a Eucharistic minister. They moved back to Connecticut, residing in Stonington, in 2003 to be closer to their sons and their families.

Jim died on Feb. 20, 2013 after being married to Lu for 66 years. Lu missed him dearly.

They are survived by sons, Jim McCaffery and Dave McCaffery (wife Jackie), all of Stonington, Connecticut; daughter, Jane McCaffery DeLisle (husband Joe) of Boca Raton, Florida and Cornelius, North Carolina; and grandsons, Sean McCaffery of Storrs, Connecticut, and David McCaffery of Stonington, Connecticut.

Donations in her memory may be made to Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church or to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter.
