Local teachers speak at national convention

Thu, 11/20/2014 - 11:00am

Anne Atwell-McLeod and Nancie Atwell will be speaking at the The National Council of Teachers of English’s annual 2014 Convention in Washington, D.C., Nov. 20-23.

The two teachers, of Edgecomb’s Center for Teaching and Learning, will present a session entitled “Letter-Essays: Engaging Kids in Social and Analytical Responses to Stories.”

A letter-essay is a sustained, informal response to a book a reader has finished reading and an ideal invitation to students to engage thoughtfully and analytically with works of literature. The presenters will share criteria and models that will allow conference attendees to pilot the approach in their own classrooms.

The session will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22.

Each year the council’s convention draws thousands of elementary and secondary educators, college faculty, administrators, and other educational professionals from around the world to participate in four days of professional learning.

Convention attendees hear presentations from award-winning speakers, attend thought-provoking sessions, share best practices, and test the latest teaching materials.
