The days after Thanksgiving all seem to have a special meaning. There is Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Small Business Saturday. These days all promote the commercial end of the holiday season.

“Giving Tuesday” promotes the works of philanthropic organizations during the holiday season. All four select boards in the Boothbay region have proclaimed Dec. 1 as “Giving Tuesday.” Since 2012, the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving is recognized as a day for honoring the works of nonprofits.

Boothbay Treasures is the local chapter of “Giving Tuesday,” an international organization. Boothbay Treaures consists of 39 nonprofits on the Boothbay Peninsula. Boothbay Treasures met Tuesday morning at the Boothbay Harbor Little League field for a group photograph.

About 100 nonprofit workers and volunteers formed a heart inside the baseball diamond.

“We’re hoping this group picture helps the community visualize how many people are involved in the work being done by local nonprofit organizations,” said Bigelow Laboratory employee Valerie Young, one of the Boothbay Treasures’ organizers.

Boothbay Treasures formed in 2012, the same year the international “Giving Tuesday” organization began. Boothbay Treasures began with six organizations. It now has 39 members, according to Young.

She hopes “Giving Tuesday” shows that a small community with about 10,000 year-round residents can a make a big difference serving the public.

“There are about 50 nonprofits on this peninsula serving local, state, national and international causes. We hope ‘Giving Tuesday’ shows what a caring place the Boothbay region is,” she said.

Boothbay Treasures has a Facebook page promoting the work of its members. Young said the group is also developing a website to promote the achievements of its members.
