Update: 4:30 p.m. 

A steady stream of voters have visited the Boothbay Town Office since the polls opened at 8 a.m.

 By 3 p.m. 750 residents out of the town's roughly 2,550 registered voters had cast ballots.

 “Today, this is huge,” said Boothbay's Deputy Treasurer Tracey Hyson. “If we're at 750, I'm really surprised.”

 Typically voter turnout is low during a non-presidential election year. In a presidential election, the town usually receives 2,300 votes. 

 “We went back and looked at the number of similar type votes and (turnout) was around 600,” said Town Manager Jim Chaousis “We easily went through 600 probably by one o'clock.”

 While the town staff has been busy fielding questions and making sure things run smoothly at the polls, Chaousis said many people have been curious about the outcome of the TIF and bond questions on the local referendum.

 “It will absolutely be close,” Chaousis said. “Everybody keeps asking me 'Yes or no?' I will be surprised if it's heavily one way or the other.”

 With less than four hours before the polls close, the town staff is anticipating anther rush of voters during the evening commute.

Original post: Today, November 5, Mainers head to the polls to cast votes on the local and state referendum items. Polls have opened at the Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Southport and Edgecomb town offices and the doors won’t close until 8 p.m. tonight.
