Lincoln County Democrats focus on voter registration

Sept. 23 in Damariscotta
Tue, 09/16/2014 - 3:30pm

Remarks by Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap on increasing voter registration, especially among young voters, will be the highlight of an early evening event that also features a volunteer-appreciation potluck supper, as Lincoln County Democrats mark National Voter Registration Day.

The event will take place Sept. 23 at the county Democrats campaign headquarters at 372 Main Street in Damariscotta, next to the Hilltop service station. All interested persons are invited.

The evening program, featuring Dunlap, gets under way at 7 p.m., to be preceded by the potluck supper, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Dunlap, who previously served three terms as Secretary of State 2005 to 2011, has long been an outspoken advocate for increased voter registration. He has celebrated Maine’s history of removing barriers to the voter registration process, and has said “it is our goal that every eligible citizen registers and participates in our elections.”

As Secretary of State, Dunlap directed the implementation of Maine's Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) Act, allowing military personnel and others abroad secure and prompt access to the ballot.

From 1996 to 2004 Dunlap served four terms in the Maine House of Representatives, where he took a lead role in dealing with environmental and wildlife issues.
