He was born in Wiscasset, March 11, 1926, a son of Leon H. and Minnie May (Norton) Grover. He attended Wiscasset schools and graduated with honors from Wiscasset High School.

He was drafted in the United States Army in 1944 and served 19 months in Italy as a sergeant in Co. M of the 34th Red Bull Division. After being honorably discharged in 1946, he temporarily served as a substitute rural delivery carrier for the U.S. Postal Service before taking a permanent job with Sanders Engineering in Wiscasset when Mason Station was under construction.

He moved to South Bristol to continue masonry work before being employed by Bay Shore Machine Co. in Damariscotta from 1949-1967. While working at Bay Shore Machine, he also worked as maintenance machinist for Sylvania Electric where he maintained 160 machines and provided other similar tasks.

He left Bay Shore in 1967 and worked at a Wiscasset grocery briefly before returning to Sylvania Electric to work three more years. In the early 1970s, Leon did carpenter work and became a hired man for the late George Hart in Newcastle for eight years, before returning to the postal service. During his postal career, he worked as a clerk in the Newcastle Post Office, and served as officer in charge and later worked in the same capacity at the South Bristol Post Office. In his later life, he had lived in Jefferson, Millinocket, North Anson and Windsor. In 2007, he returned to Wiscasset to live until he became a resident of Mid Coast Senior Center in October 2014.

After leaving the military service, he married Janet Sproul of South Bristol. They had two children and were later divorced. In May 1980, he married the former Judith Campbell of Newcastle. They spent winters in Florida until her death on Oct 5, 2005.

Leon was an ardent hunter and fisherman. While he was physically able, he looked forward to deer hunting trips in both Maine and Florida. He was a member of local gun clubs during his active life. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association.

He thoroughly enjoyed his pet dogs and cats over the years, especially his canine friends, Nillie, Chocolate, and Rhoda, and cats, Sam and Spunky.
