Lemuel L. Brown of Alna died peacefully on March 6, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his three children, after a brief battle with cancer.

Lem was born August 15, 1935 in Pemaquid, the son of William and Dorothy (Oldham) Brown. He spent the majority of his childhood in Pemaquid and Boothbay, graduating from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1953.

Following high school, he attended SMVTI, served two years in the U.S. Navy and worked as a merchant mariner before attending the University of Maine at Orono, graduating in 1963 with a degree in civil engineering.

He worked for the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Fish and Game Department before starting his own civil engineering/land surveying business in the early 1970s and moving to Alna in 1974.

Lem was well known and respected in his profession, having surveyed many properties in the area over a 30-year career.

In retirement, he continued to enjoy farming, gardening, spending time with friends and family and helping people in any way he could.

Lem will be fondly remembered for his generosity, kindness, sense of humor and humble, gentle ways. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Steven; and a brother, David Brown of Boothbay Harbor.

He is survived by his three children, Ellen (and husband Rob) of Port Orange, Fla., Dan (and wife Michelle), of Edgewater, Fla. and Pemaquid, and Lisa of Port Orange, Fla.; a sister, Jane Spofford (and husband Ron) of Barters Island, Boothbay; a sister-in-law, Pat Brown of Old Orchard Beach; a nephew, Dick Spofford (and wife Bridget) of Barters Island; nieces, Sally Carroll of Boothbay, Laurie Simmons (and husband Rich) of Boothbay, Bonnie Stover (and husband Mark) of Boothbay, and Liz Kelly (and husband Dan) of Oakland Park, Fla.

A graveside service will be held at West Bristol Cemetery Sunday, May 4 at 1 p.m. An informal reception/cookout will follow at the end of Lemuel’s Lane, Pemaquid (weather permitting).

Donations in Lem’s memory can be made to the Alna Fire Department, P.O. Box 267, Alna, ME 04535

The family would like to express its thanks to Miles and St. Andrews Home Health and Hospice, and in particular, to Nurse Molly Barnes for the care and compassion she showed our father until the very end.
