’Round Town

Lara & Bobby

Thursday is not a particularly special day of the week, unless of course, you work four 10-hour days and commute to Boothbay Harbor from Lincolnville Maine. In this case, Thursday is liberation day, especially if you’ve driven through the ice and snow of winter. But you didn’t have to drive from Lincolnville for last Thursday’s event at the Boothbay Harbor Opera House. You just had to climb some stairs.

In fact, the cozy upper bar of the Opera House was a perfect setting for a relaxing evening of entertainment with no thoughts of a long winter drive home. The warmth and friendliness of family and friends was an ideal venue for the music of our dear local Lara Tupper and husband, singer songwriter, Bobby Sweet.

Lara, as most will recall, is the daughter of Jill and Stan Tupper. Stan grew up here, practiced law and was a United States representative back in the ’60s. Jill did not set out to become a lawyer but probably knew more about the law through her work with Stan than most. It was just a matter of time until she would have her own practice. Lara would not become a lawyer, but she wrote a lot, all the while singing her own special tunes. In many ways, she studied music as intensively as her parents studied the law.

And then she met Bobby Sweet from the hills of the southern Berkshires, in westerm Massachusetts.

Bobby is part of a big musical family that goes back generations. Highly accomplished musicians who didn’t just hang out on the farm, they traveled and sang and performed all over the country. Their music was formed by rural country roots which also has found its way through Bobby to the present music he shares with Lara. Together, Lara and Bobby complete the sounds of their admired singer-songwriters with a twist of lyrical love. Their music is at once soothing and invigorating. It was a special event at the Opera House with many friends, old and new. A good time was had by all.

Thank you Lara and Bobby for sharing your time together with us.
