Lady Seahawks lose tight match with Mt. Abram

Sat, 09/21/2013 - 8:30am

The Boothbay Region High School Lady Seahawks soccer team lost a hard fought match against Mt. Abram at home on Thursday, Sept. 19. With the 4-2 loss, the BRHS soccer team drops to 0-4 for the season. But things are better than they might seem for the young, understaffed team.

The game started fast, furious and focused in front of Boothbay goalkeeper Jaime Wheeler. No one had even worked up a sweat before Mount Abram’s Elise Luce scored in the first two minutes of play.

After the tough start, the Lady Seahawks’ players regained their composure and dominated the rest of the half, putting steady pressure on and keeping the ball in Mt. Abram’s territory.  Junior midfielder Sinead Miller scored to make the score 1-1 at the half.

The second half started the same as the first with a quick goal by Mt. Abram’s Katie Jordan to bring the score to 2-1.

Mt. Abram’s squad did a much better job in the second half of keeping the pressure on the Seahawks defense.  Brenna Alley, Dana Greenleaf and Colette Bertin were rock solid on defense, consistently breaking up developing plays, blocking shots and generally disrupting a persistent Mt. Abram’s offense.

With about 10 minutes left in the game, Boothbay’s Cagney O’Brien was able to loft one over the head of Mt. Abram’s goalie to once again tie the game.

With few subs throughout the game, the tired Lady Seahawks could not keep up against a relentless, more rested Mt. Abram team. Katie Jordan and Alora Ross were able to pick up two more goals for Mt. Abram to end the match with a 4-2 win.

Despite the poor record, the young Lady Seahawks’ quad is showing improving skill development, ball control and are starting to work the ball well on the field.

Coach Kim Dionne said, “The Seahawks played a great game against Mt. Abram on Thursday. The offense came on strong and worked the ball in the middle. Sinead Miller and Cagney O’Brien each scored a goal while Hannah Winslow worked hard to keep the pressure on. Brenna Alley, Colette Bertin and Dan Greenleaf were unstoppable on defense. We look to bring this intensity to our next game against Spruce Mountain.”

Boothbay 1, Spruce Mountain 10

Coming off a tight match with Mt. Abram, the Lady Seahawks took on Spruce Mountain, a Class B squad on September 23. Despite the offensive runs with many shots on goal, The Lady Seahawks were defeated by the Phoenix 10-1. Sinead Miller scored the only goal for Boothbay, as the Lady Seahawks struggled with being aggressive for the duration of game.

Coach Dionne said the lack of substitute players hurt Boothbay's ability to maintain a fast pace, against the strong Spruce Mountain offense. The Lady Seahawks will host Telstar at 3:30 p.m. on September 25. Like Boothbay, Telstar has yet to win a game, and Coach Dionne said she is really looking forward to how Boothbay will compete in an even matchup.
