‘Round Town

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines

It was a clear and warm May afternoon in Boothbay Harbor and people were milling around the waterfront casually enjoying a perfect spring day.

The Novelty was heading out for one of its scheduled daily trips around the Harbor and to Squirrel Island. There were five people aboard, with Captain Heather at the helm. Two of the passengers were a couple from Massachusetts for whom I'd photographed the day before at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens.

They were in heaven and enjoying every minute of their visit to Maine. It was fun to be part of their special time. I'd promised to stop by the dock to make a photo of them at the boat and say hi. They were thrilled and so excited for their little Harbor excursion. They will be back!

As I strolled along the docks, the collection of boats reminded me that things were well under way for the approaching season. I could hear the echoing chant of Captain Bob Fish as he traversed the Fisherman's Wharf parking area, “Great day for a boat ride,” he would say from his ticket booth one dock over. He was quite the promoter.

I have met many people over the years who toured aboard a Captain Fish boat. A great way to see the area with family and friends.

The variety of watercraft assembled on floats and at the docks covered all the bases. A couple rowboats were up on a float near the shore. The Island Lady was there, fresh from a shipyard checkup. Bay Lady was awaiting mast and rigging. The Balmy Days was sporting a new pilot house and Miss Boothbay was sparkling and clean. Quite a display of vessels.

Wouldn't it be fun to try them all out over the summer season. At the very least, it’s nice to know there are so many opportunities for those who visit.
