Top 10 senior Kyle Alamo is looking forward to college, but will miss his time at Boothbay Region High School.

“It's nice to be on top of the food chain,” Alamo said.

Alamo is the son of Charito and Dr. Aquilino Alamo of Boothbay. He is attending the University of Maine at Orono in the fall where he plans to major in per-veterinary science, and possibly minor in French language.

“I've been to both Quebec and France. It's the best way to learn, being around the language constantly,” Alamo said. “The new schedule in school helps because you have two periods to learn and become more immersed in the language.”

Alamo acts as the teacher's assistant in the French I class, helping students who are having problems and generally assisting the teacher, Madame Gorey, who Alamo states is “one of my favorite teachers.”

“Learning a second language is so important so you can communicate with people,” Alamo said. “I hope someday to become really fluent.”

Alamo says he has a lot of fun speaking French, and makes a strong effort to only speak French when he visits France or Quebec.

“Sometimes (the locals) chuckle but they appreciate that I'm trying,” Alamo said. “It's a fun language to speak and I try very hard to not use English.”

Alamo is a member of the National Honor Society, senior class president, and the captain of the cross-county, track and field, and Nordic skiing teams. He was also a member of the yearbook club and is currently involved in the BRHS production of “High School Musical on Stage!” where he plays Ripper and Mr. Tenney.

“This is going to sounds cheesy, but there's a song in the play called ‘The Start of Something New’ and this really is,” Alamo said. “People are involved with this play who haven't done much, if any, drama before, and it's given me a chance to really connect with a lot of students who I probably would never have even said hi to otherwise. The cast has really banded together, and it's going to be amazing.”

Alamo said he plans to keep in touch with friends using Facebook and wants to attend homecoming and graduation ceremonies, particularly of the current freshman class in four years.
