A fresh, new exhibit of pastels by Kimberly Skillin Traina liven the walls at The First, N.A. bank in Boothbay Harbor.

A burst of colorful images, created by layering pure pigments of soft pastels, evoke summer days on and around the water. Traina’s use of colors transform ordinary scenes into magical moments by capturing the quality of light, essence and feeling of a place.

“I have a passionate love affair with color ... intense, pure, brilliant color. I am equally as passionate about being in nature by, on, or in the water,” Traina said.

“I study the color of light and its ability to transform. Whether I am walking in nature, driving in my car, gazing out a window, I am absorbing color, light and shape. When I come to my easel, it flows, taking on a life of its own. If I’m not painting en plein aire, I start with a photo, but the end result is always its own story.”

The First, located at 77 Oak Street, is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon.

A portion of sales supports the Boothbay Region Art Foundation.
