Kenniston Hill Inn fundraising continues

Thu, 10/23/2014 - 12:00pm

The deadline for moving the Kenniston Hill Inn in Boothbay is looming.

"The effort to save the historic landmark from demolition has garnered wide support from the community, throughout Maine and across the country,” said project organizer Susan Brackett. “I have heard from Kenniston descendants from as far away as California lending their support."

Brackett said the original plan to move the building to the Railway Village in one piece is far more costly than first estimated. The original quote of $65,000 to move the 1797 portion of the building would require CMP, Fairpoint and Time Warner to lower their utility lines as the building moves up Route 27. CMP's quote was $40,000, Fairpoint's quote was $55,000, and a quote from Time Warner was not obtained.

It seems the only viable option involves cutting the building in half at the second floor window sills, which will allow it to pass under the power lines and has a price tag of $81,000. The current total raised for the project is $72,800.

“We are in the 11th hour and it is time for anyone who wants to help with this endeavor to step forward,” said Brackett. Brackett encourages those interested to send a tax-deductible check made out to the: BCA, Move Kenniston Hill Inn Account, c/o Deb Todte, P.O. Box 375, Boothbay, ME 04537.

Contributions may also be dropped off at Boothbay Harbor Framers Gallery in The Meadow Mall.

Please contact Susan Brackett at 207-633-3966 with questions or a pledge amount. Checks will not be cashed until the goal is met. If the effort falls short in anyway, all checks and funds will be returned!

Fundraising will continue to raise the funds needed for restoration and long term maintenance of the Kenniston house once it is situated in its new surroundings.
