Juniper-McKown Point: Tennis, tennis and more tennis

Fri, 07/25/2014 - 2:30pm

After looking at the calendar I had a difficult time realizing that the summer of 2014 is just about half over. Let's be sure we don't waste any time enjoying all the things our area and particularly our Point has to offer. Summer always seems a little too short when you are having fun.

Yoga classes are under way on Tuesday mornings (9:15-10:30 a.m.) in the Community House. Brittany Warren is our talented instructor and offers a class that is welcoming to all yoga levels, including beginners. It is a great way to strengthen the body and mind and to meet summer friends. The Community House is a wonderful space to practice yoga now that we have our new floors and ceiling fans. Both JPVIS members and non-members are welcome to attend.

With Wimbledon behind us and our own "Strawberries and Cream" JPVIS Exhibition Match approaching on August 9, the tennis courts have been full, with both juniors and adults working on their games. Already this summer our juniors have demonstrated extraordinary talent and grit in exciting matches against Christmas Cove and the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club. Special thanks to Bill Barton and Nat and Dianne for providing transportation and also to Christmas Cove for hosting the kids on July 17. Congratulations to the JPVIS juniors who competed: Devin, John, Allston, Ethan Herbert, Tess, Emma, Sally, Jackson, Oliver and Andrew. Also congratulations to the juniors who participated in a terrific match against the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club on July 8. That group included Chris, Devin, Andrea, Ethan, Reid, Sally, Tess, Jackson, Auggie, Herbert and Mitchell. Tennis director Dave Taylor will continue to give the juniors opportunities for match play in the remaining weeks of the season.

Competing at at the USTA tournament at the Maine Pines Racquet and Fitness club in Brunswick were Alex White who participated in the girls 16 singles and David Pai, who participated in the Boys 12 singles. He played three matches in a round robin format and won all three to earn first place.

The stars of the Ladies Tennis Luncheon in the Community House on July 8 organized by Jessica Dumphy were the delicious salads and delectable desserts. They look forward to working the calories off on the courts in the coming weeks in round robin play and in morning clinics with Dave and Po. Those clinics are offered at 8 and 9 weekday mornings. Anyone interested in joining round robins should contact Andy Matthews or Emily Whiting.

Tennis players have noted with appreciation the work of Stuart McGillvray, Dave Taylor and Andy Matthews to maintain the upper hand in the battle with Mother Nature for control of the courts. Improvements such as steps to court three and four, and relocation of fallen trees and wandering chipmunks have kept the courts in perfect condition as we enter into the end of July. Mark your calendars now for the August 9 Exhibition Match. Lee Corbin and Emily Whiting are looking for volunteers to arrive early with their waffle irons to help prepare the traditional breakfast of champions for participants and spectators. Finally a reminder that short- term one or two week memberships are available to renters and non-members who would like to use the courts or participate in round-robin play. See Dave Taylor for membership forms.

The Repa house continues on into their third week of continuous family and friends visiting. This past week, son Teddy, with wife Michelle and their two children, Tyson, age 8 and Kyra 7 are with the Repas. The kids are enjoying sailing camp at the Southport Club. They come home each day filled with excitement even on rainy days with knowledge about how to make different knots, fold the sails, explain the rigging, etc. Ted and Betty enjoyed taking them to Bingo night there as well. Joining their group of guests are their New York friends Teddy and Michelle Tetro with their children. The Repas' "Sun Raye House" remains very lively. Laundry, shopping, cooking seems endless, but the chaos is blessed with family and friends.

We are very happy to see lights and activity in the Racy cottage. It seems like we have to travel 3,000 miles to catch up with our fellow Californians.

A reminder for all JPVIS members to appear at our Community House this Saturday, July 26 for the annual association meeting. Coffee at 9 a.m. and meeting at 9:30 a.m.
