Juniper-McKown Point Column: New officers, community garden, and twin girls!

Wed, 08/26/2015 - 7:15pm

It is hard to believe that the end of our summer season is fast approaching. Hopefully our weatherman will be a little kinder to us than he was last weekend.

Our next season’s Juniper Point Village Improvement Society (JPVIS) officers seem to already in place. Jonathan Sylvester is now our acting president. Former president, Lee Corbin, has moved to the office of treasurer. We all owe a big thank you to them, as well as to all the other hard-working officers of our community.

The Barneses returned several days ago from a visit to Vinalhaven Island as guests of a former Stanford University band member met during Art’s long tenure as director. A total of 10 band alums were present. It was a little difficult for us to realize this group that we had known as students are now doctors, lawyers, CEOs, etc. We did learn that they still know how to have a good time and so did we.

We all realized that the summer of 2015 is winding down when we had to say good-bye to our tennis director David Taylor and his family last weekend. We are happy to learn that he will return next season with his wife, daughter and new twins that are due to be delivered. News flash from Lee Corbin: Dave and Becky Taylor are the proud parents of two beautiful girls born Aug. 24!

The tennis program will continue to function under our assistant director, Po Grant, next week, but only until Friday when most tennis activities will be wrapped up. Po will be around running clinics until that time. The men’s and women’s doubles and round robins will continue into October and the courts will be open for play until then as well. All tennis inquiries can go through Emily Whiting or Andy Mathews.

Dave, Becky and Katherine Taylor would like to thank everyone at JPVIS for another wonderful summer.

Ted Repa reports that the Community Garden on Route 27 (Rittall farm, across from Miss Piggy) is now in full harvesting mode. With well over an acre of vegetables, the bounty is sent to the food pantry each Friday morning to be distributed that day. The garden is always looking for volunteers so any interested JPVIS residents should call the Congregational Church at 207-633-4757 and they will put you in touch with a coordinator. Also, the food pantry will accept any excess harvest that you might have from your own gardens on Fridays as well.

Our Juniper Point cottage was bursting with family members from all over the U.S. last week to take part in a family reunion that was planned by our daughters, Holly and Jennifer. All the bedrooms were filled to capacity and the overflow was housed in area motels. Dinners at 34 Juniper Point fed between 16 and 18 people for three days. Fortunately, there was a lot of help from our guests and children.

Ben Leoni recently purchased the classic Boothbay Harbor One Design, India. She is an early wooden One Design that had been refurbished by Brooklin Boatyard and David Nutt. She is a pretty black sloop with varnished spars and transom. Ben is a happy new parent of this vessel. She is moored in Juniper Point Cove.

Kirk and Judy Leoni just returned from an eight-day cruise Downeast. They had great weather and went as far as Northeast Harbor. They were accompanied by their dog, Cooper, and for the first several days were joined by Jon and Cindy Smith of Southport on their classic yawl, Muscrat.

The Barneses will be in residence until about Sept. 10, so please forward any news, activities or announcements to me for this column. In the meantime, enjoy all of the end of the season activities and, hopefully, the good weather.
