Joseph Osgood Callnan, 86, died peacefully on Wednesday June 20, 2013 at Penbay Medical Center in Rockland.

He was born on July 16, 1926 in Houlton, the son of the late Thomas and Bulah Smith Callnan. Growing up in Houlton, he attended local schools and was a graduate of Houlton High School.

Upon finishing his schooling he enlisted in the United States Navy where he proudly served his country until his honorable discharge. In 1948 he married his high school sweetheart Marie and the couple were married for 64 years.

In 1966 he bought the East Boothbay General Store, renaming it Callnan’s Market. He loved running the store where his whole family worked. He ran the store for 13 years. Along with the store he worked as a cable splicer for New England Telephone, a position he held for over 47 years.

His hobbies included going for rides around Ocean Point, a trip he would try to make at least a few times a day to enjoy the spectacular views. Each and every morning you could find him with Marie walking around town.

In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and going to his camp on Pocomoonshine Lake near Calais. For many years he would spend the winter months in Stuart, Fla.

An avid reader he could often be found in his garage reading the novels of Louis L’Amour, of which he had quite the collection. Along with reading he could never turn down a game of cribbage.

He was predeceased by his son Richard Callnan, his daughter Donna Marie Callnan, and a brother, Phillip Callnan.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marie Callnan of Boothbay Harbor; daughters, Margaret Branch and her husband Stephan of Boothbay Harbor, and Marsha Brown and her husband David of Wiscasset; sisters, Kay O’Brien of Portland and Joan Small of New York; brother, Kenneth Callnan of Texas; granddaughter, Stephanie Branch of Portland; and grandson, Forrest Brown of Bangor.
