Tue, 12/23/2014 - 8:00am

Boothbay Region High School senior forward John Hepburn became the fifth Seahawk boys' basketball player to reach the 1,000-point scoring milestone during the third quarter of the home game against Mountain Valley on Monday, Dec. 22.

Needing just 24 points coming into the game to reach the milestone, Hepburn was fed the ball consistently throughout the first half by his teammates. He scored 20 points in the first half and got his 997th and 998th points on free throws early in the third quarter. His memorable basket to reach 1,000 points came on a lay-up midway through the quarter.

Timeout was called by the game officials and Seahawk coach I.J. Pinkham presented Hepburn with a certificate of achievement and the game ball.

He joins Ben Smith (96-00, 1,007 points), Anthony DiMauro (09-13, 1047 points), Adam Sterrs (92-96, 1,285 points) and Kris Noonan (04-08, 1,411 points) as the Seahawks who have scored 1,000 points in their careers. Melissa Hodgdon (83-87, 1,009 points) and Katie Sibley (99-03, 1,444 points) are the two BRHS female players who have scored 1,000 points in their careers.
