It's National Old Stuff Day

Wed, 03/01/2017 - 7:30am

Once in a while, I like to "surf the net," as the old saying goes, to come up with ideas for articles, get informed, or just to prompt a laugh or two.

One of my favorite entertaining and informative websites is nationaldaycalendar.com. This website gives you a list of "national" days (weeks, months) throughout the year. For example, Feb. 28 was National Public Sleeping Day (does falling asleep at your desk count?) and March 1 was National Horse Protection Day (wonder if my assistant editor and horse owner Susan Johns knows that?).

Which brings me to March 2. In addition to it being the day to celebrate my second favorite cream pie — National Banana Cream Pie Day — it is also National Old Stuff Day.

Now, this day is not particularly a day for cleaning out your drawers and closets and donating your stuff to charity or throwing it away (I am sure they have a national day for that). No, the website says that "It's a day to break out of the old routines and try something new." It's a day for doing things differently -- at home, at work, at leisure, etc.

I don't know about you and your job, but mine can be pretty routine at times — even though 90 percent of the news is different each week in the newspaper.

The National Old Stuff Day listing goes on to say, "Approach the day with a new attitude. Consider alternatives to each of the choices you make each day."

Before knowing it was Old Stuff Day, I had scheduled it as a vacation day (need to use up 2016's vacation days before they disappear), so I guess it's a way of breaking away from the routine. And, as an "alternative choice," I have decided to do a bit more leisurely reading today — something I don't do a lot of since it puts me to sleep at night (March 2 is also Read Across America Day as well!). I have Friday and the weekend off too.

Perhaps when I get back to work on Monday, I'll have a new attitude, approach my job with a new outlook, and maybe do some additional delegating so I can do things differently.

Hope you have a nice Old Stuff Day and can find a way to change your routine for the better.
