It takes a village

    Dear Editor:

We, the Boothbay Region Garden Club, know so well that “it takes a village.” We can’t do our community projects which include scholarships, garden beautification, working with children and elderly, and so much more, without the help of members, homeowners and visitors to the Garden Club’s Home and Garden Tour.

So help you did! Our Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce and Boothbay Register — outstanding coverage in many ways, also Flagship Hotel, Boothbay Fire Dept., YMCA and Compass Rose provided great signage for our recent Home and Garden Tour. Thanks to your publicity, we sold out for the second straight year — unbelievable.

To our event chairmen, Leslie Cook, Nan Jackson, Jane Lunt, Jim Singer and Alice Schambra, huge thanks for your amazing patience, attention to detail, and follow-up.

Our homeowners of Southport: Mr. and Mrs. Nick Hurd, Mrs. Anne Vartabedian and All Saints by-the-Sea Summer Chapel provided history, views and perfection from every angle. On to Boothbay: YMCA Connection homes: Mr. and Mrs. Larry Sullivan, the Seybold-Hagan home, and Mr. and Mrs. Dan Zajdel at the Annable farm with raffle quilt — all these homes were decked out in their flowery finery awaiting visitors, just beautiful!

In another older section of Boothbay on Sawyers Island we found the home of Mr. and Mrs. Howie Barter, Mrs. Jean Slocum and Eddie. Guests were regaled by the view, eclectic finds and great stories, real and fiction. Lastly, we visited the Shahan residence on Barters Island, home to Mel and Evelyn and their historical farmhouse w/accompanying antiques and gardens. Many “oohs and ahhs” were heard throughout this tour!

Behind the scenes and many thanks to: Barbara Barnhurst who supplied great refreshments at All Saints, Southport Elementary for letting us borrow its parking area, our local CSD and St. Andrews Village for the use of their buses and the most courteous drivers in Maine.

Last and certainly not least, our BRGC members, friends of members and husbands of members who baked, sold, hosted and parked and hopefully enjoyed their experiences. In all, well over 100 persons participated in the organization of this tour. Kudos to all of you!
