Isle of Springs Column: Trivia night, Reba and more

The get together at the Ridlon corner cottage that was mentioned last week also included Muffie Fernald, a long-time Islander. I’m sure she was glad to be here. She seldom has a chance to come on board.

Patsy and Will had a dinner party last week. I just happened to be walking by their cottage and she invited me. There were several couples there, including the Millers, the Pierces and the Ridlons. The food was delicious and the company was fun!

Thursday night there was a totally new island activity at the casino. It was called trivia night, and anyone who wanted to go was welcome. It was planned by Molly Bogart who (I think) prepared all the questions. There were teams of six players and various types of questions were asked. Some had to do with island “history” and others were just interesting questions. It was attended by all ages, but some of the younger kids didn’t count as part of a team though they sat with that team. Everyone who went thought it was fun, so hopefully it’ll be done again next summer.

Erika Woolson and her partner Katie Crowley along with their son Jameson were at the Island over last weekend, so Jameson and his cousins Lydia and Georgia Woolson could get to know each other. The two families live a long way apart in the winter — Salem, Massachusetts, and Laguna Niguel, California.

Hannah Morehouse was on the Island this past week, but only for one week. She hopes she can stay longer next summer. Her daughter, Ann, her partner, Mary, and their daughter have moved from the Kelly/Swift cottage to the Morehouse cottage.

Robin and Jon Woolson with their daughters Lydia and Georgia left on Saturday to go back to their home in California. The Ridlon family cottage will be occupied by Margoe and Jamie Shaw and kids. They will come sometime this week.

The ladies tennis activity is continuing. We play most mornings around 10 a.m., and those usually included are Judy Miller, Deb Pierce, Patsy MacKenzie, Pat Ridlon and myself (Sue Woolson). Sometimes others join us including occasionally a man or two: Alan, Scott or Will Hutchinson, Pat Smith (when he’s here) and it’s more fun than competitive.

Nancy Patterson and her husband, Neil, are here with their two giant dogs who are big enough to ride on, never mind be walked on a leash.

Patsy and Will MacKenzie are off the island on an “entertainment” trip. They went to Bangor to see a Reba McEntire concert. They left the Island on Friday with rain looming and had a fun lunch in Moody’s Diner. They took a quick nap and then discovered that there were two opening acts and she would sing at 9:20 p.m. so they had a leisurely burger at the courtyard Marriott and wandered over to the Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion. It was a carnival atmosphere with tents, vendors and major crowds. They met up with her tour manager who gave them tickets and backstage passages. Reba had a flat tire so didn’t get there until 8:30 p.m. “Hi y’all, no time to talk.”

Patsy said it was a fabulous concert. Reba introduced Will (her fabulous director) and his adorable wife, Patsy. After the show they “chewed the fat.” They had breakfast the next morning. Reba’s daughter worked there so she got them a room off the primary dining area. When they were leaving, the manager asked to get a picture of Reba with the staff. They made the 5 p.m. ferry after shopping for groceries. Amazing what you can fit in 29 hours, according to Patsy. She said they won’t soon forget what a wonderful time they had with their friend!

Carol and Peter Burvill are due back around September first. I’m sure Carol will join the ladies tennis group. And Dee and Pat Smith are coming back around the sixth of September. People come and they go, but it’s always fun to see them all.

The Sunday evening service was given by John Ridlon who read about Maine areas near our island. He also mentioned a 1960 novel named “Damariscove,” another Maine island. Michael Smith accompanied the hymns on the organ. There was a full house, and all those I talked with enjoyed the service.

We need to thank Nan Bogart for the wonderful cover she made for the big tennis roller. It is a nice job done well!

Please get any island news to Pat Ridlon for next week’s article.
