Letter to the Editor

I support public works

    Dear Editor:

It has been brought to my attention that there have been a few hurtful, disparaging comments made on social media lately criticizing the efforts of Boothbay Harbor’s Public Works Department. I am saddened and disappointed that in a community that is so supportive of each other and so willing to chip in and help our neighbors, that there are a select few who prefer to tear people down.

Public safety employees in all towns in Maine are working around the clock to provide services, protect our citizens, provide ambulances and fire protection for people in need and keep our streets and sidewalks clear. Forty-five inches of snow in the last 10 days is a monumental amount of snowfall in such a short period. Our crews are exhausted and in some cases short staffed, but they are not complaining and they are doing the best they can.

We live in a town where our sports teams consistently receive citizenship awards and we are reminded before each game that if you can’t say something good, don’t say anything at all. The majority understands and is supportive of all the effort that goes into maintaining our town. As an alternative to criticizing, it would be more helpful for morale and supportive for our fellow community members to thank them, pat them on the back and let them know that you appreciate all that they do for all of us.

Thank you to Chris Leeman, the Public Works Department and all public safety employees for all of your efforts.

    Thomas Woodin

    Boothbay Harbor Town Manager
