Holiday Season

How the Grinch stole a Christmas tree sign

Fri, 11/30/2012 - 5:45pm

Sometime in the night November 27, a thief stole the homemade sign advertising the Brewer family’s Christmas tree lot. The sign had been propped up at the intersection of Ocean Point Road and Back Narrows Road on a small, plastic children's easel.

But the holiday season is still looking bright, according to Linda Sprague Brewer of Boothbay.

“We can't let anybody ruin our Christmas spirit,” Brewer said Friday, Nov. 30. Wallace, her husband of 46 years, nodded in agreement.

“It's silly,” Brewer said about the theft. “It was just a sign put together with cardboard and tape.”

The sign was sentimental to Brewer and she said it wasn't of value to anyone but her and her family. They had used the sign and easel combo for years to direct those looking for local Christmas trees and greens to her home on Back Narrows Road.

The family had taken a break from selling the past few years and this was their first year back. They have approximately 20 trees to sell before December 25.

Linda Brewer's daughter, Barbara Warlo, and granddaughter, Amylynn Balsdon, installed a replacement sign made of poster board on Ocean Point Road across from Back Narrows road on Friday at 1 p.m. — this time without an easel.

Brewer said she hadn't heard of any other local tree lots being victimized, but that all the sellers know each other. She said she relies on Facebook and the Boothbay Register for information on what's happening in the community.

If you have information about the stolen sign or other holiday mischief, contact the Boothbay Register or the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.
