Hoecker secures victory for Boothbay tennis

Seahawk tennis upsets Class B South No. 3 Mountain Valley

Boothbay senior Max Hoecker won the fifth and deciding match May 11 as the Seahawks upset Mountain Valley of Rumford in schoolboy tennis. The Seahawks and Falcons each won two matches prior to the No. 3 singles match pitting Hoecker against Kaleb Noyes.

In first singles, Mountain Valley’s Camden Mason defeated Rowan Kristan 6-4, 6-2, and the Falcons won No. 1 doubles team with Josh Hosdson and Brady Davis defeating Ryan Russell and Mason Erhard 7-6, 6-4.

Boothbay won second singles with Henry Drapeau defeating Cameron Gallante 6-4, 6-3 and the Seahawks received a forfeit in second doubles. Hoecker won his match 7-6, 6-4 securing Boothbay’s second team victory for the season. This is Hoecker’s first season in the Seahawks starting line-up. He used his serve and aggressive in defeating his Falcon opponent.

The three other matches were completed when Hoecker began his match. “I was nervous but I mixed up my serves in the tie-breaker to win the first set. And the rest of the way I didn’t focus on the score. I focused on each point, and as they say, I focused on placement, not power,” he said.

Boothbay (2-3) is in sixth place in the Class C South Heal points. Mountain Valley is 3-3 and in third place in the Class B South standings. Boothbay will play Class C South No. 3 Madison (4-1) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 16 in Boothbay Harbor.
