In the spring of 2014, Tim Sprague developed a painful wound in his shin that went all the way down to the muscle.

Not only was the wound painful, Tim knew he could lose his leg if it became infected. When standard treatments didn’t work, his doctor referred him to the LincolnHealth Wound Care Center.

At the LincolnHealth Wound Care Center, he met committed providers trained in the latest techniques and technology. They were a “Super Bowl team,” said Tim.

“I knew I was in good hands. I knew they would get it. I had that much confidence. They were doing everything under the sun.”

A partnership between LincolnHealth and Healogics, a national leader in wound care and wound research, the LincolnHealth Wound Care Center in Boothbay Harbor features highly trained local providers using the latest technology to ensure every wound heals as quickly as possible.

In its first full year of operation, the wound care center was named a “Center for Distinction” by Healogics after achieving patient satisfaction and healing rates of more than 93 percent. In northern New England, only six wound care centers were named a Center of Distinction and only one received the award in Maine.

Dr. Mark Mainella, Medical Director of the wound care center, said Healogics has developed algorithms that help standardize treatment of different kinds of wounds to speed up the healing process.

The experienced local staff provides an individualized level of care that helps make the Wound Care Center a friendly place to visit, he said.

“We spend a lot of time with patients,” said Mainella. “They see the same people every week and they get a very personalized type of care. The continuity of care is a big reason patients like coming back.”

For Tim, the healing process required more than 40 visits, biologically engineered skin grafts and a referral to a vascular surgeon.

Slowly, however, the wound got better and today Tim is back at work and looking forward to playing guitar and singing vocals with his band, “Murky Water,” this summer.

Tim never had any doubt that Dr. Mainella and his team would find the solution.

“They were excellent. They are really caring people. They care about making sure everything is done properly and you are well taken care of,” said Sprague.
