Help the family

Thu, 10/09/2014 - 12:00pm

    Dear Editor:

Our small community has had its share of tragedies this year. For us, we will always be grateful for Emma's survival and the love and support we received from just about every single person we know. I still have a hard time thinking or talking about it without tearing up. It is something that has changes our lives forever. The experience has given me an even greater empathy for other mothers having to go through the same kind of situation. The ongoing doctor and therapist appointments, X-rays, trips to Portland, insurance (car and medical), food, stress, out-of-control emotions, paperwork, loss of work and sleep, family members that get left behind — it is totally overwhelming.

When I heard about the accident in early September involving Aryn Markee, I sent out a message to her mom, Julie. Julie is a casual friend; I know her to say hi to or trade a story about our kids or pets. When I look her up on Facebook, there it is — a short private message from her, only 12 hours after Emma's accident, sending prayers and love and support. The mom thing.

When something like this happens, you think, what if it had been my child? How is she holding up? What does the family need in way of support? Do they have funds to cover their expenses? How is she (Julie)?

It has been over a month since Aryn's accident, but it is not over for them. It has been eight months for us and it is not over yet. Aryn needs work on her face, but the doctors are still waiting for the swelling to go down.

I am reaching out to the community. I know there are so many in need right now, and how can we give to everyone? But if you think you can spare anything to help this family, I know they will put it to good use. Please donate to their cause at "Help for the Markee family" on the GoFundMe site, or send to: Julie Markee, 27 Old Trevett Road, Boothbay, ME 03437.

Thank you, to all of you for being who you are.

    Donna Leonard
