Help celebrate 250 years

Tue, 07/01/2014 - 10:30am

    Dear Editor:

The town of Boothbay is having its 250th year celebration on August 22, 23 and 24. The Boothbay Civic Association is managing the celebration for the town.

How did the BCA get involved?

Early this spring, we heard that the town did not make advance arrangements for the 250th celebration. I presented the project idea to the BCA and they voted me chairman of the event. Joan Rittall and Estelle Appel are my assistants.

On Friday, Aug. 22, there will be a seafood festival on the Boothbay Common. It is headed by Ralph Smith with his new catering company, with Bet Finocchiaro of Bet's Fish Fry helping him.

On Saturday, Aug. 23, there will be an old-fashioned parade, children's activities, food and music on the Common. Later in the afternoon, there will be a pig roast, bean hole beans and all the fixings provided by Ralph and volunteers. Music during dinner will be provided by the Maine National Guard Jazz Band from Bangor.

Events for Sunday, Aug. 24 on the Common are still being planned. The Boothbay Region Land Trust will hold a hike from Barrett's Park in Boothbay Harbor to Bayville. The "best" will be an evening concert at Ocean Point Marina featuring the U.S. Northeast Navy Show Band from Newport, R.I., followed by fireworks shot over the river in East Boothbay.

We really need donations and sponsors for the event. And we need volunteers. Donations may be made to the Boothbay Town Office or mailed to the BCA, P.O. Box 81, Boothbay, ME 04537.

We are having a meeting for volunteers on Wednesday, July 9, at 7 p.m. at the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service headquarters next to the town office. Please attend if you want to help. For more details, call Dawn at 207-633-4500.

Let's make this a once in a lifetime, memorable 250-year celebration.

    Dawn Gilbert
    Event chairman for the BCA
