Great Lobster Jam

Wed, 07/29/2015 - 2:30pm

    Dear Editor:

This past weekend the Lady Seahawks basketball program hosted the fifth annual Boothbay Lobster Jam. Teams competing included Boothbay, Camden Hills, Cheverus, Foxcroft Academy, Freeport, Gardiner, George Stevens Academy, Leavitt, Lincoln Academy, Lisbon, Mattanawcook Academy, Mount Desert Island, Mountain Valley, Mt. Blue, Oak Hill, and St. Dom’s Academy. The field was divided into four pools with each team playing 3 games. Four pool winners squared off in a single elimination “Final Four” bracket. The “Final Four” included Cheverus, Foxcroft Academy, Gardiner, and Mountain Valley. In the championship game, Cheverus edged Gardiner, 52-49, in a back-and-forth thriller to become the 2015 Lobster Jam Champs!

Cheverus’ Kaylin Malmquist was named the tourney MVP. The junior point guard was a real dynamo at the helm of the Lady Stags offense. Malmquist continuously set up teammates for easy scores, and took over when she needed to becoming an offensive aggressor in the championship game.

Gardiner’s Mary Toman was the winner of the tourney’s Skills Competition relay, finishing with a time of 24.99 seconds, a new course record. Toman, a junior forward, proved what a versatile player she is not only in the skills competition, but throughout the tourney as well.

The event was a smash hit with players, coaches and fans. Many thanks go out to the parents and students who helped organize and volunteered their time for the weekend. The Lobster Jam is a huge fundraiser for the Lady Seahawks program. We received many contributions from local businesses and townspeople and would like to thank the following: Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, Coastal Maine Popcorn Co., Dead River Company, Dragonfly Graphics, Grover’s Hardware, Hannaford’s, Hometown Convenience, Lincoln HealthCare, The Lobster Dock, Eddie Tibbetts and the lobstermen of Atlantic Edge, Todd Simmons and the lobstermen of Boothbay Lobster Wharf, Dave Bean and the lobstermen of Bristol Lobster, Hugh Thompson and the lobstermen of Robinson’s Wharf, Douglas Carter and the lobstermen of Sea Pier, P.T.A., Boosters, the BRYMCA and Channel 7. Special thanks go out to Eric Dunton for setting up both gyms and being on call all day.
