Letter to the Editor

Giving thanks

    Dear Editor:

That bittersweet time of year is upon us once again. We are all ready for a break, but yet, part of us hates to see it end. One by one, the doors of our favorite hangouts begin to close, and we bid farewell to our friends until next spring.

So it seems that it is the perfect time to give thanks to another season of making great things happen, as a community.

There are so many people in this community who make a positive difference, but as this seasons draws to a close, I feel inspired to recognize one particular family.

This family never passes on the opportunity to give back (or to help promote) our community. Fishermen’s Fest, Windjammer Days, Land Trust Events, Town Events: 250th Celebration, Harbor Fest, Early Bird, Bed Races, Harbor Lights ... no matter the event, this family is heavily involved and donating not only financially, but personally as well!

I think it’s pretty safe to say that most of these events would not enjoy such success, if not for this family.

Each year they (and a team of others) donate their Thanksgiving holiday so that every person in our community has a place to feel at home and a warm meal to nourish them.

They serve on the chamber board and volunteer on several other committees. They work full time jobs, go to college and still manage to be in the restaurants working hard for their customers, every single day.

Many thanks to the Ralph and Elena Smith family. This community is extremely fortunate to have you.
