Gateway plans

    Dear Editor:

After reading the workshop ideas in the Aug. 17 Boothbay Register, I would like to concur with (selectman) Wendy Wolf on her comments, “When I round the bend (near Boothbay Center) and head home, I feel surrounded by the Boothbay region, my home. I want tourists to feel the same way.”

That’s the way it used to feel, but now at the center, we are not greeted by a historical building, aging pines and the simple common with the gazebo. That was a warm and welcoming scene. That was “coming home.” We now have an overkill stone wall and gate house.

That gateway at Boothbay Center was only one side of the street, so it can be done.

I think it would take a very special person to be able to put back ambiance in this area, and just perhaps, if we look hard enough, we can find that person.

This is a very special place and if we don’t stop and think, this will just become Anyplace, USA.
