Friends of Windjammer Days announce two new events

Thu, 06/01/2017 - 7:15am

Legendary sailmaker Nathaniel Wilson will provide one of the new events at this year’s Windjammer Days Festival to be held June 25 through July 1 in Boothbay Harbor.

Wilson’s company has been in the business of making sails for windjammers and larger ships for several decades. His sails are made in the fashion of those on the Mayflower and the Constitution. Many of the vessels coming to Windjammer Days fly his company’s sails.

Wilson’s demonstration, with lessons about the history and making of sails, will take place on Monday, June 26 from 1-3 p.m. Parking for this event is in a designated area located at Ocean Point Marina, 216 Ocean Point Road, East Boothbay. A Windjammer Days volunteer will greet visitors and give directions for the short walk to the sail loft upon arrival at Ocean Point Marina.

Later in the week, visitors will have a chance to learn about the history of the schooners that fished (and still do) off the banks of the Maine and the Canadian maritimes. The Boothbay Region Historical Society is inviting all Windjammer Days visitors to view fishing and navigational gear, as well as personal items of crew members who lived aboard these vessels. Visitors can take in photos and displays of the age of fishing under sail and get a glimpse into the hard life of those who put to sea to earn their living.

All of it can be seen at the Boothbay Region Historical Society, located at 72 Oak Street, Thursday, June 29 to Saturday, July 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

Windjammer Days is a week-long festival with something for everyone including art, parades, food and drink events, pirates, competitions, live music, kid activities, fireworks, and 12 windjammers.

The complete schedule of events is at www.boothbayharborwindjammerdays.org. Information can also be found at the “Friends of Windjammer Days” Facebook page.
