Friends Of Thai Daughters opens new Sunflower House

Thanks to the generosity of many Midcoast residents and businesses, Boothbay-based Friends of Thai Daughters (FTD) recently expanded its program in Chiang Khong, along the Lao border in northeast Thailand. As part of a four-year effort, FTD is growing its capacity to transform the lives of up to 75 girls and young women each year.

Program participants are affectionately known as Daughters. With its Chiang Rai Sunflower House and the addition of the Chiang Khong Sunflower House (CKSH), FTD is providing its program to 40 girls and young women in Northern Thailand this year. Daughters are from ethnic minority groups including the Shan, Karen, Lisu Lahu, Akha and Hmong. All were at risk of being trafficked.

The new house in Chiang Khong, under the loving care of housemother and long-time FTD partner Puangthon ‘Thoo’ Takan, is currently serving 15 resident Daughters. As part of FTD, they live in a supportive home environment, attend local schools, and receive emotional support from their FTD family including their older FTD “sisters” and staff. They are also participating in LIT Clubs, a program developed by U.S.-based LIT World. LIT Clubs build confidence, community and literacy through an interactive curriculum. FTD is LIT World’s first partner in Thailand. Through its comprehensive and long-term program, FTD seeks to not only prevent trafficking but to inspire the future leaders and role models in the region.

Trafficking, or modern day slavery, is a $150 billion industry impacting an estimated 45.8 million people worldwide problem. The Asia Pacific Region has the unfortunate title of most slaves with an estimated 30 million with 425,500 in Thailand alone. FTD’s program targets trafficking risk factors including a lack of documentation, abject poverty, neglect and abuse, lack of education and safe housing.

FTD has already scheduled its 2017 Sunflower Celebration for Friday, Aug. 4 at Darrows Barn in Damariscotta, Maine.
