Friends of the Southport Historical Society

Wed, 06/08/2016 - 1:30pm

The annual meeting of the Friends of the Southport Historical Society will be held at the Southport Town Hall on Wednesday, June 15 at 7 p.m.

We are proud to have Southport author, Sarah Sherman McGrail as our guest speaker. She will be discussing her latest books, “Looking Back” – a two volume history of Korean War and Vietnam era Veterans from the Boothbay region. Sarah spent eight years on this tremendous project, honoring our friends and neighbors who served during these two “forgotten” war periods, conducting hundreds of interviews with veterans and their families and friends. Some of the biographies are short, others up to 30 pages and are richly illustrated with photos taken during their time in the service. Over 434 local veterans have their personal histories recorded and preserved for posterity.

Sarah has previously written several books, including “Heroes Among Us,” “Southport-the War Years,” “Harbor Journal” Vols. I and II, and a beloved children’s classic, “The Littlest Tugboat.”

There is no admission charge, light refreshments will be served, and copies of “Looking Back” will be available for sale.
