letter to the editor

A free society

    Dear Editor:

Bill Hunt was correct a few weeks ago when he wrote in and told Fred Nehring that he did not know anything about business.

In return, a petulant letter was sent back to the editor claiming Mr. Hunt was greedy and engaged in some inane invention called wage suppression? Now Nehring insults all restaurant owners who do not buy into his progressive tripe that they should not even be in business at all.

Touting himself an expert on capitalism is his claim. He is just another servant of the Maine People's Alliance. The former bureaucrats, retired college teachers and boatyard bean counters who write this fine paper need to take a reality check. Government on all levels has no purview or position to tell business how much to pay its employees, all in the name of some weak-minded form of collectivist egalitarianism. Defenders of freedom and democracy they are not.

Noted Austrian school economist, F. E. Hayek, had it right:  “There is all the difference in the world between treating people equally and attempting to make them equal. the one is an act of a free society, while the other is a new form of servitude.”
