Captain Frederick W. Pennoyer III, U.S. Navy (ret.) of Flat Rock, N.C., died July 17, 2014.

Because of his long family ties, his ashes will be scattered in the waters off Boothbay Harbor.

He was the grandson of the late Frederick Pennoyer, a West Boothbay Harbor resident of many years.

In 1936, he was appointed a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy by the late Sen. Wallace White from Maine. His late father, Vice Admiral Frederick W. Pennoyer Jr., U.S. Navy, spent his boyhood summers at the West Boothbay Harbor family home. Admiral Pennoyer was a 1915 Naval Academy graduate, Naval aviator, and nautical engineer.

Captain Pennoyer was the oldest living member of the Pennoyer family, now enjoying their sixth generation in West Boothbay Harbor.

He was a much decorated combat veteran of World War II, serving on boat the aircraft carriers, Enterprise, Saratoga, Yorktown, Lexington and Bunker Hill. He was aide and flag lieutenant to Vice Admiral Marc Mitscher, Carrier Task Force Commander on board Lexington and Bunker Hill during campaigns for New Guinea, Mariana Islands, Philippine Islands, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. In November 1944, he was wounded on the Lexington when it was hit by a kamikaze aircraft. He was on board the Bunker Hill when it was hit by two kamikaze aircraft. His Asiatic Pacific campaign ribbon has nine battle stars.

He had two combat tours in Korea commanding the destroyer escort, McGinty, and destroyer, Uhlmann.

Commands at sea later included the attack cargo ship, Uvalde, and, during Vietnam, Service Squadron Two. He retired in 1971.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Madeleine Bradford of Eastbourne, East Sussex, England; a son; a stepson; and three grandchildren.
