Yvette Torres Fine Art opens the 2016 season on Saturday, May 28 with a solo exhibit of paintings by Francis Grant, “A Painting Is Something You Cannot Do,” May 28-June 26.

The opening reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 3 at Yvette Torres Fine Art, 464 Main Street, Rockland.

In describing his work, Grant remarked, “DeKooning said, 'A painting is something you cannot do.' I try to do something I can't do again (One often wishes one could). The painting is almost always an inevitable resolution through stages of development and is unconscious in its result, a product of continuous search.”

Grant was born June 16, 1931 in Heppner, Oregon, but grew up in New York City attending parochial and public schools. After graduation he served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He returned to New York, studied art under Stephen Greene from 1954 to 1957 at Parsons School of Design in New York, and then attended New York University studying under Philip Guston at the New School for Social Research for two years.

Following his university studies he traveled to Europe aboard a freight steamer where he spent several months visiting museums, sketching and experiencing what he called “a culture of great sanity and earthiness.”

Grant moved to Round Pond, Maine in 1971. His artwork has been shown in several galleries in New York, Boston and Maine.

The Yvette Torres Fine Art is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, and by appointment. For more information, call 207-332-4014 or visit www.yvettetorresfineart.com.
