First ever Foundation Cup is a success

Tue, 07/22/2014 - 3:30pm

Sunday morning, July 13 saw eight sailboats of various classes approach the start line off Spruce Point for the first ever Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Junior Program Foundation Cup race. The concept is adult skippers and adult sized boats with young people as crew getting a taste of what big boat sailing is all about.

The winning boat on corrected time was Firebolt, a J-80 owned by Bill Hunt with his crew Aidann Clark, Jackson Lorrain and Casey Duncan. Finishing second was Captain Sandy Taft in his Etchells Gemini, crewed by James Evans, and inches behind him was Dotsy (a J-29) sailed by the Lloyd family (Carol, Sally and Sam) with junior sailors Rodie Mayne, Emma and Jax Van der Veen.

Next followed Alley Cat (J-32) owned by Winston Kipp, and fifth was Chuck Koch sailing Pirouette (a J-22) and crewed by Dolly Clarkson and Samantha Clarkson.

Finishing sixth was Bob Scribner in Panache (F & C44) Jack Duncan and Ethan Grunttes. In seventh was Allegro (Endeavour 35) sailed by owner Cathy Latta, and rounding out the fleet was Priscilla owned by Sally Smith with her crew Oksana Omcitichenco.

All agreed that it was a wonderful day with exciting winds for the course which included a circumnavigation of Squirrel Island. Plans are underway for the summer of 2015 as you read these results.
