A special showing of the documentary “Walk with Me” is scheduled for Thursday, April 12, 7 p.m. at the Harbor Theater. The film centers on the teachings of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese monk, teacher, author and peace activist, and one of the 20th century’s most revered masters of Zen Buddhism. His books on the art of mindfulness, a path to peace, compassion and understanding in our troubled world, have become popular in this country and beyond.

Julie Perry, a board member of the non-profit Harbor Theater, will introduce the film and host a Q&A session afterwards. Perry has been studying the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh for more than 25 years.

Filmed over three years at Plum Village monastery in France, and on the monk’s speaking tour of America, “Walk with Me” is a meditation on a community immersed in both existential questions and the everyday routine of monastic life.

Through his brother who became a Zen Buddhist monk, director Max Pugh was asked by Plum Village monks to make a documentary of Thich Nhat Hanh’s teaching tour of America in 2011.

“The experience of being on the road with the monastics changed my life in many ways,” said Pugh.  “The practice of deep listening, sharing and living alongside the monks moved me to dig deeper to find ways to best represent their way of being on film.”

Pugh teamed up with a friend, co-director Marc J. Francis, who said, “As soon as I saw Thich Nhat Hanh for the first time, I was really impressed by his sense of presence and the way he was so mindful.”

The Zen master told them that he did not want to be singled out or idolized, so they focused on the whole community of monks living at Plum Village. Francis said, “The making of the film became a mindfulness practice in itself. “

“We focused solely on a close-up observational style to film the monastics, and combined that with wide shots to capture the natural world that they inhabited,” Francis said.

Narration by Benedict Cumberbatch.

Asian sweets, green tea and coffee will be served before the screening. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $8 for members and children under 18. The film is suitable for all ages, and runs 82 minutes.

The film (only) will repeat on Friday, April 13, 2 p.m. All tickets for the matinee show are $6.
