Feed Our Scholars bake sale, raffle Dec. 6

Tue, 11/25/2014 - 12:15pm

It’s that time of year. With loads of parties, lots of entertaining, hostess gifts aplenty, what would be great to have on hand for such occasions?

Why, sweets from Feed Our Scholars bakers, of course! There will even be some gluten-free items.

On Saturday, Dec. 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Shaw’s of Wiscasset, there will be scrumptious goodies for purchase. Take them away for a donation to the fund that provides weekend packs of food to Wiscasset school children who need a steady infusion of nutrition when school meals aren’t available.

As well as yummy goodies, there will be a raffle of holiday gift baskets. One basket is designed for a child, while the other is geared for an adult. The tickets are $1 per ticket and 6 tickets for $5. Generous collections of simple pleasures and cozy winter gear await. The raffle will continue through the week to Dec. 13’s Christmas Fair at St. Philip’s Church, 12 Hodge St., 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

At the conclusion of the fair, the winning tickets will be drawn and winners contacted.

The backpack initiative has been supporting 56 children during the first half of the school year and has recently committed to adding the Head Start class which will be taking home packs beginning in January.

There are studies aplenty buttressing the common sense knowledge that in order to more nearly reach their potential, children need nutritious food to fuel their growth, physically and intellectually. The sooner nutritional intervention is provided, the better the outcome for the child’s future.

So plan to stop by the bake sale table at Shaw’s to gobble up sweets, purchase raffle tickets, and help keep food in the hands and bellies of the community’s little ones.
