Although there weren't as many competitors, the drama was not lacking in the 2013 edition of the Early Bird Bed Races.

Because only three teams signed up for the November 23 bed races, the teams had to run individually, instead of side-by-side.

The bed-racers would be up against the clock as much as they were up against one another, and by the time the dust had settled, only two seconds separated first and second place.

The Boothbay Harbor Opera House team of Ben Snead, John Solorzano, Kevin Kiley, Paul Noah and Millie Santiago was able to outrun all comers.

The Opera House team was able to finish the course just ahead of the Janson's Clothing team. The Opera House team won the day with a time of 26.44 seconds compared to 28.23 seconds for Janson's. The McSeagull's squad had trouble rounding the bend and came in third place with a time of 39.78 seconds.

Janson's, which is typically a powerhouse in the bed races, was championed by members of the 2013 Boothbay Region High School boys varsity football team. The team of Captain Jason Maddocks, Nick Kilgus, Antonio Maulolo, Howie Carter and Julian Aponte were unable to guide their superhero-themed bed past the Opera House's flying four-poster.
