Fabulous Fourth of July celebration

Sat, 07/08/2017 - 7:45am

Dear Editor:

We were once again blessed by a “Beautiful Maine Day” to celebrate the Fourth of July on the Boothbay Common. For the 31st year the Boothbay Civic Association continued to provide the community with a traditional Fourth of July feast. Joan Rittall is, of course, the glue that has kept this celebration going and we are thrilled she is still at the helm.

Our day started early with coffee, generously donated by the Red Cup, and donuts, by our local favorite, Bakers Way. From setting up the grills to cooking the chicken we can always count on our friend John Leonard. Speaking of cooking chicken, a huge thanks to all those who stood over that hot grill all day from set up to breakdown. Manning the hot dog grill again this year was John Bertelot, Stephanie Hawke and Tony Goode.

Leading the music was the Community Band playing some of our favorites, followed by a dedicated local musician, Arthur Webster. Boothbay is filled with great musicians and our afternoon was blessed with Paul Johnson and Amber Jones, finishing up with Chip Schwehm.

Keeping us cool once again was Mill Cove Lobster. Love that new “ice machine.” Need to get myself one of those! If you stood in line for a ticket you might have met Kay Evans, and manning the salads was none other than Rosemary Bourette, Thanks ladies. Everyone's favorite, Jane Homer, was once again collecting and serving the pies. A BIG thanks to the many dedicated local pie and goodie makers; we could tell that your work was appreciated!

Vickie Huskins does a great job organizing the vendors, who put on a spectacular craft show. The “dunk tank” provided by the local fire department is always a hit and Fourth of July, in our opinion, would not be the same with out it! Thanks for your time. Desiree Scorcia from the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library kept the kids entertained with some summer games, always appreciated.

Many thanks to the town of Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Grover's Hardware, Hannaford, Yellow Front Grocery, Wayne Closson, Pete Leighton, Giles Rubbish, the Boothbay Register for their support and Lincoln County Sheriff's Office for keeping us all safe.

Lastly we want to thank the BCA members for continuing to come together for “The Common Good.”
